The Citizens Advice service helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice, and by influencing policymakers.

Every Citizens Advice Bureau is a registered charity reliant on trained volunteers and funds to provide these vital services for local communities.

Barclays - increasing access to free money advice

Barclays logo

A long-term partner, Barclays, was interested in helping people get out of debt. The Citizens Advice service, as the largest free money advice service in the UK, was a perfect partner.

Barclays is supporting a second tier service of specialist telephone support for money advisers.

Although we have made good progress in obtaining the bulk of the funding necessary to make a start on the project, increasing debt levels, means there is an urgent need for term funding to meet anticipated deficits in the coming years.

Experian - profile raising with policymakers

Experian logo

Experian wanted to raise its profile in a positive way, especially in the political world. Citizens Advice has a long history of successfully influencing the development of policy and practice.

Together, we established a strong presence at the Annual Conferences of the three major political parties and at a variety of other events during the year.

Prudential plc - improving financial skills

Prudential logo

Prudential wanted to explore the possibilities for empowering people to make more informed decisions about their finances. Together we developed a programme for nine bureaux to carry out community-based projects delivering face-to-face personal finance education on a range of issues, such as, how to budget, saving, understanding credit and debt and financial planning to adults.

This project also provided capacity building support to over 70 other bureaux to ensure they received the information and training they need to deliver high quality financial skills programmes.

On the basis of this experience, we wish to work towards including financial capability as part of our core work in all our bureaux and outreach advice locations by 2010 to compliment our extensive debt advice.

We are now actively seeking financial support for our ongoing Financial Skills for Life programme.
