The Group was established in 2003 to provide a forum for MPs and peers to discuss debt and personal finance issues, to monitor legislative developments in this area, and to provide an opportunity for liaison between Members and organisations with an interest in these issues.
The Group is chaired by Mark Lazarowicz MP and the other officers include: Andrew Tyrie MP, Colin Breed MP, Mike Weir MP and David Drew MP. Recent meetings have covered issues including: bank charges, fuel poverty and energy debt, financial education, pension reform and illegal money lending. The Group's 2007 New Year reception heard speeches from the then Economic Secretary to HM Treasury, Ed Balls MP, and the chair of the Treasury Select Committee, Rt Hon John McFall MP
In September 2007 the Group launched a report on fuel poverty, in conjunction with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty. The report calls on the Government to take urgent steps to tackle rising prices and the poor practices of some suppliers to help ensure that the target of eradicating fuel poverty among vulnerable groups by 2010 is met. The report, and accompanying press release, can be downloaded below.'
