Introduction to social security law and appeal representation

Course outline

This three day course is ideal for those who need to find their way around the law to represent at appeal tribunals. The first day considers how legislation is structured and gives practical experience using resources ( CPAG handbook and legislation volumes) to help interpret the law. The next two days look at researching, preparing and representing before an appeal tribunal. Using practical examples, the course concludes with a ‘mock’ tribunal session.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • recognise how social security legislation is structured and find the law
  • describe the role of a representative and the constitution and function of the tribunal
  • use the handbooks and volumes of legislation effectively
  • identify types of evidence that may prove useful at a hearing
  • use guidance and case law to interpret legislation
  • present a case in a methodical way
  • identify options following an unsuccessful appeal
